Linking to Excel
By Jerry Hoberg
Jul 17, 2002, 14:57

Description
Dynamic links can provide a two way data link between Excel and Munex. In the example below, an Excel spread sheet computes the revenues available for a proposed bond issue. The link between the Total Revenue column in the Excel spread sheet and the Max P+I constraint in Munex permits easy, automated updates. Changes to the Excel spread sheet are reflected in the Munex file each time you solve.

How to Create a Dynamic Link
1. Open the Excel spread sheet to which you wish to link. The Excel spread sheet must be open whenever the linked Munex issue is open.
2. Go to Munex and open the issue you wish to link.
3. Select the Munex cells you wish to link by highlighting the specific cells. In the example on the next page, the Max P+I constraint was selected.
4. Press Ctrl
5. Fill in the Define Link to Excel form as described on the opposite page.

Notes
The information required to establish the dynamic link includes the Excel spread sheet name, the work sheet name, and the beginning cell or named range of cells to link. The specific range of Excel cells linked is determined by the number of cells selected in the Munex file. The contents of the linked cells must be compatible, i.e. numeric cells from Excel must be linked to numeric cells in Munex, dates in Excel must be linked to dates in Munex. Finally, note that both the Excel spread sheet and the linked Munex file must be open simultaneously for the transfer of information between the two programs to occur.

How to Define a Link to Excel:
1. Enter the spread sheet name
2. Enter the worksheet name
3. Enter the beginning cell or named range in Excel
4. Click on the “OK” button.
